Great and Holy Thursday

With the blessings of His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion, First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church outside Russia, on Great Thursday April 09, 2015, the parishioners of St. Sergius of Radonezh Orthodox Church Sargodha Pakistan remembered the four holy traditions:

(1) Mystical Supper (2) The washing the feet of the Apostles by Jesus
(3) The prayer of Christ in Gethsemane (4) The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

Mystical Supper: “Take, eat, this is My Body…Drink of it all of you, this is My Blood… Do this in remembrance of Me.” On Thursday morning at 10:00 am the worshipers gathered for the Divine Liturgy, after the Divine Liturgy Fr. Joseph Farooq preached the faithful about the sacrament of Holy Communion and made them to understand the institution of the Eucharist by Jesus when He shared the Passover meal with His Twelve Apostles. He further said that Mystical Supper revealed Jesus’ Divine Son-ship and authority and sacrifice of life.

The washing the feet of the Apostles by Jesus : Fr. Joseph said the faithful that by washing the feet of His disciples, He manifested His perfect love and revealed His profound humility and showed us that we must be humble if we want to be like Him.

The Great Thursday and Evening Session:

The Twelve Gospels read at the place of worship on Great Thursday evening. Later the faithful reflected on other important significant events * prayer of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane and * the Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus. They felt the depth of Jesus’ agony and sorrow. Although Jesus was Son of God, but the faithful have strong believe in His truly human existence which helped Jesus to experience suffering and to learn obedience. In the second episode the faithful went through the experience of the Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus and they learnt how to follow the Foot Steps of Jesus as we face sufferings, persecutions and false of blasphemy cases and trials in the court of Pakistan.

Towards the end of the prayer service and 12 Gospels reading the faithful were taught that being an orthodox Christian we must learn that passion week help us to bring radiant light Risen Jesus against the ungodly and dark forces of the world. Gospels” are read, in which the story of Christ’s Passion is related. Parishioners stand with lit candles for the entirety of the service, which they then take home.
